what the
I have heard that in some parts of Europe vegetarianism isn't accepted as a norm. I didn't expect to find that this as the case in a London hotel in 2008.

Today I had a meeting with a lot of lovely Indian women. They are all mostly Jain Hundus and therefore vegetarian. Upon checking about vegetarian options for lunch I was told that we were booked in for buffet menu B which consisted of tuna salad and cheese ploughmans. He actually asked if they would eat tuna. Tomorrow we were booked for buffet menu C which is pate and chicken salad. Thankfully have managed to change this to a hot menu with choice, but it was too late to change things today.

It turned out that the tuna salad was a big bowl of dressed tuna with a garnish of tomatoes and cucumber round the edges and a sprig of lettuce. The Cheese ploughmans consisted of big lumps of cheese, quite a lot of bread and crackers and some pickles. No veg or green shit of any kind. It took quite a lot of convincing to get him to bring out some salad.

Other than that the meeting went well. I even got to the train station 10 minutes before my train but sadly not early enough to get a seat. When I joined the train there was only one man standing in the door way so I was able to bag a nice flat place to lean against and didn't have to stand with my bag between my legs. By the time we left the station there were nine of us in the door way. Still my new MP3player allowed me to giggle all the way home while listening to 'life the universe and everything'.

I had trouble persuading my brother that Salmon wasn't a vegetarian option for his wedding; the fault lies with lots of people who went "vegetarian" after BSE, and therefore don't eat red meat but do eat fish. I know people refer to themselves as vegetarian and still eat chicken... people are dumb.

Send the hotel this link: http://www.vegsoc.org/caterers/index.html

Admittedly this was a long time ago, but when I went to Italy with a school trip, the hotel we stayed at thought that a vegetarian meal consisted of merely providing exactly the same as the meat dish, but just removing the meat component and replacing it with a slab of cheese. Pretty much regardless of what the meal actually was.

I know I'm a complete carnivore, but even I thought that was rubbish.

The introductory training course we had when I started work was at an hotel in Kettering. Dinner was barbecued stuff; we waited for about 20 minutes after the meat came out before asking where the veggie option was. The waiter pointed at the pile of (pork) sausages & said "Under that".

The Jewish girl sitting next to me made a written complaint; from what I can remeber, she kicked up such a fuss that she got a free weekend break there. Not sure why she'd *want* one, though...

Today we had the a la carte menu which consisted of 5 meaty options and one veggie main meal. Two of the ladies has two veggie starters instead.

That is really bad. I remember a veggie freind when i was a teenager going to visit family in France... it's so unusual there that they thought it was hilarious, apparently, she spent the whole time being ribbed.
It really gets to me when fish is offered as a veggie option: I do get very annoyed when people who do eat fish call themselves vegetarian, and it seems to me that because so many people do this, caterers assume that all vegetarians will eat fish.

Hmmm... that was not particularyl useful was it... oh well, my two pennorth anyway.

I am also planning on going on holiday at the end of april so I need to get that sorted out first. Weekend tickets are going to get booked up first so if you are all restricted to a weekend we may ahve to look into it soon.
